Today's walkitcornwall quote

I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it's such a beautiful animal.... I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her. — Ellen DeGeneres

I want to say again thank you so much for making my first visit to Cornwall in more years than I care to remember so memorable.

My personal philosophy of walking

Serpentine, shipwrecks and kestrels

The hovering kestrel always amazes me as they can remain fixed in the sky with hardly any effort whatever the strength or direction of the wind.

The object on Pentreath beach is the boiler from the Maud a 79-ton steam trawler that broke loose from its tug on February 11th 1912. At low tide it can be seen but its size is only apparent when someone stands next to it. I would like to thank the person who modelled the boiler for the benefit of the wider public.

Two photos of the Lizard peninsula blue seas. No touching up the photos with Photoshop or any other computer wizardry. WYSIWYG- what you see is what you get. One is Housel Bay, the other….isn’t. ok it’s the cliffs around Kynance Cove.

Finally there are only four small shops that sell Serpentine objects around the Lizard Town or at the Southernmost Point. One such owner is Ian Casley down at the SP. You will see him working away diligently and expertly but not with the rough material that you and I would pick up anywhere on the Lizard.  He tells me that the best rock has already been found so unfortunately the grade of the rest is not up to the standards that produce these wonderful ornaments. These workers have the rights going back generations for the best Serpentine.

From vases, lighthouses, penholders and paperweights to the finest earrings, cufflinks and pendants the meticulous work that Ian and the others put in is on show for all and sundry. Go in and have a look at them at work on the lathes and marvel at their work. The beauty of the rock has been recognised by these experts and teased out to produce stunning works of polished natural rock. Oh and by the way with less of the best rock around the objects are investments for the future increasing in value.
